waves (lanjut)

Waves in the same place combine to produce a single wave. When waves combine to produce a different wave from the original it is called interference.

wave interference

Constructive interference increases amplitude by combining the amplitude of the two individual waves. Constructive interference can be seen at Wave Interference 2. Destructive interference decreases the amplitude by combining the waves in such a way that the resulting wave is smaller then the largest original wave. Interference of light waves creates colorful displays. Interference of sound waves produce beats.

A standing wave is a pattern of vibrations that simulates a wave that is standing still. Interference causes standing waves. Standing waves have loops that are separated from the next loop by points that have no vibration called nodes. They also points midway between the nodes that have maximum vibration called antinodes. Standing waves can have only certain wavelengths.
